Hāwea Green Waste Centre
The Hāwea Green Waste Centre is a HCA volunteer run facility where residents can drop off green waste and purchase garden mulch.
The Hāwea Green Waste Centre is provided by Queenstown Lakes District Council for the use of Hāwea residents. Opened approximately 20 years ago, it is operated by the Hāwea Community Association, along with substantial input from local volunteers. Income generated is used to support Hāwea community projects and facilities.
Residents drop off their green waste at the centre, paying according to the pricelist below.
‘Green waste’ includes hedge/grass clippings, garden waste, branches/slash from trees, unwanted shrubs and bushes. Tree stumps are too big for mulching and therefore are not accepted. Please do not leave ashes as they are a fire hazard.
There is a ‘burn heap’ for vegetation at the Centre (material that will not go through the mulcher or survives the mulching). Please put flax, toe toe, pampas, cabbage tree leaves, broom and ivy on the ‘burn’ heap.
Matured mulch is usually available to purchase. Hāwea residents can self load trailers or fill bags to take mulch for garden use. Most Saturdays, roughly between 2:45 – 3pm, John McCone from the Green Waste Operations Team operates his loader to fill trailers with mulch. Use of face-masks is recommended.
Opening Hours
Volunteers open the Centre every Saturday, 1pm - 3pm. Payment in cash to be made to the volunteer.
Hāwea residents can also collect a Green Waste key from the Hāwea Store & Kitchen and use whenever the store is open. Make payment in cash at the store and please return key promptly after use.
