Lake Hāwea Family Fishing Classic

Location: Lake Hāwea
The Lake Hāwea Fishing Classic is held on Lake Hāwea annually, with prize-giving at Hāwea Hotel. With over 12 categories and 5 entry classes, there is plenty of fishing fun to be had for the whole family. All net proceeds from this event are distributed back to local community groups.

Town vs. Country Competition
Next date: Waitangi Weekend 2022
Location: Various, both Lake Hāwea & Hāwea Flat
Every Waitangi weekend, the annual ‘Town’ (Lake Hāwea) vs ‘Country’ (Hāwea Flat) competition is held, organised by the Lake Hāwea Community Centre Committee. It begins with a quiz on the Friday and is followed on the Saturday by the ‘challenge’ day - sports competitions, then the classic spud gun challenge, egg cup relay, tug of war, children’s races and the lolly scramble. Profits are donated back to local community groups.
Lake Hāwea Epic

Location: Hunter Valley Station & Dingleburn Station, Lake Hāwea
The Contact Epic is about the challenge of circumnavigating the shores of Lake Hāwea by mountain bike. The Epic ride is a 125 km journey of discovery about the land, about your bike and about yourself.
It is a once a year opportunity to be part of a race and a great day out riding through the Hunter Valley and Dingle Burn high country farming stations of Lake Hāwea. The course is undulating and varied with river and stream crossings, lots of short climbs and long descents. There is also the 95km Classic option on the same course and a shorter 35km Traverse race also starting at the Lake Hāwea Dam and riding through local farming country and along the mighty Clutha and Hāwea Rivers.

Hāwea Mid-Winter Christmas Dinner

Location: Lake Hāwea Community Centre
The Hāwea Mid-Winter Christmas Dinner is held at the Lake Hāwea Community Centre and is a family friendly event. A community group prepares and serves a Christmas meal for $45 per family or $20 per adult and the bar is open to purchase beverages. This is a lovely opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate during the shorter, colder days of winter.
Hāwea Christmas in the Park

Location: Peter Fraser Park, Lake Hāwea
Late afternoon community Christmas celebration, with a special visit from Santa. Food trucks available or bring a picnic and beverages (no bar on site). Bring your chairs, picnic blanket and sports gear to enjoy our annual Hāwea Christmas in the Park.

Hāwea Picnic Race Day

Location: Hāwea Domain
The Hāwea Picnic Race Day is a family-friendly event, organised by the Hawea Picnic Racing Club. The event has been running annually for 70 years, on 28th December.
Races include: Triathlon Relay; 2000m Pacing Handicap; Saddle Trot for Hacks; 2600m Trot; 2000m Pace; Musterers Race; 2600m Trot; 1/4 mile Sprint; 2000m Trot. Young people's riding events start at 10am with the opening event at 12.30pm.
Great entertainment for children, including games and races.
