Minutes of the Guardians of Lake Hawea held on 28 July 2021 at the Lake Hawea Community Centre at 7.30pm.

PRESENT: John Langley (Chair), Alison Brown, Jerry Burdon, Jane Forsyth, Don Robertson and John Taylor.

APOLOGIES: Amie Capell and Jess Clark.

MINUTES of the 26 May 2021 meeting were taken as read and confirmed. J Langley/ D Robertson.

General Business:

  1. Lake level – 343.375 masl.

  2. Erosion Monitoring Plan – John L reported that the submission to Contact Energy is ready to go.

  3. Pest plants – Jane talked about ODT article re NIWA report on Elodea. ORC has draft report from NIWA with the reference locations. The locations are 2 on the west side of the lake, 2 on the east and 1 on the north shore near Hunter Valley homestead. We still don't know where or how deep the Elodea infestations are. The full report will be available after the September ORC meeting.

  4. Liaison with Contact Energy – Will keep in touch with Neil Gillespie re reports on significant in lake level activity so community can be informed.

  5. Freedom camping – Guardians will submit on QLDC Freedom Camping bylaw when it is reviewed.

  6. HCA meeting report back – fencing to be used to cordon off nesting dotterels at Craigburn has been approved. Sign re riparian planting between Grandview and John Creek also approved at $665. A number of HCA executive not standing again. 

  7. Application for affected party approval for commercial fishing licence for Lakes Wanaka and Hawea was discussed. Issues to be raised – size of boat and problems of launching at the Neck, boat trailer parking, toileting, importance of clean boat and equipment, both boat owner and private individuals. Ask to offset emissions by donation to riparian planting around Lake Hawea.

    Agreed to make joint response with Guardians of Lake Wanaka. Don and Alison to prepare.

  8. Riparian planting – John L had taken Max shepherd of WAI Wanaka along Gladstone track to John Creek to identify new Sites. Money is available for public and private land.

  9. Graeme Ballantyne’s letter re monitoring of Lake Hawea water quality – John L has sent a copy of Guardians submission to ORC. They have responded by saying a monitoring buoy is to be placed in Lake Hawea. Don to communicate with Graeme.

  10. Dotterrels at Craigburn – On site visit with Poppy Simpson-Wells, LINZ agent on Wednesday 4th August. Extent of cordon and permission to erect to be discussed, plus wording for signs. John T to talk with Jan Solbak re need for socially acceptable extent of cordon. Jane and Alison to liaise with Poppy.

  11. Nicki Holmes, new manager of DoC in Wanaka – decided to wait before liaising/meeting with her.

  12. Grebe platforms – John L will put out new platforms for the Peninsula immediately. Later 1 will to in at Neck and 1 at Silver Island.

  13. QLDC carbon emissions – John L reported first meeting to be at Arrowtown and later one on Wanaka side.

  14. Noxious weeds – Jerry raised concern re extent of noxious weeds on west side of lake. Jerry will ask Richard Burdon to contact POPPY Simpson-Wells directly.
